Sharing in the Wonder of the Natural World

Who, Me? I never intended to start a blog. A blogger? Nope, not me.

My parents will tell you I was full of questions as a young child. From their stories, it appears that there was a relentless stream of “But why?” questions. I’ll admit, the questions continued even as I grew older. My father would sometimes say to me, in exasperation, “Seana, I don’t want an interrogation!”. Studying psychology, training as a cadet in military intelligence (an interrogation unit no less!), working in market research, and now teaching and conducting research at a university, these career choices did nothing to dampen the questions – really, my work has only encouraged them!

One area that sparks my curiosity is our natural world. I have an endless fascination with nature, especially the animals, birds, bugs, and other living creatures that share our world with us. It’s a thrill when I see something new on the trail or see something familiar in a new way. I love that sense of discovery in nature. It feeds my sense of wonder. This is one reason why I love nature photography; not only has it inspired me to learn more about nature, it encourages me to slow down and be more in the moment. That moment can be so powerful, fostering a connection with something larger than myself, a connection that grounds me and fills me with wonder. It brings me great happiness to share those moments of wonder with others.

As for my background, I am a lecturer at a university, teaching research methods, animal behavior, and human dimensions of animal behavior in an animal policy program. I conduct research to help pets in shelters as well as pets and their people in the community. I also work on a fascinating project looking at attitudes toward seals and sharks on Cape Cod, MA. I have a background in market research in addition to clinical and social psychology. I live in central Massachusetts with my husband, four children, my mother, and currently my daughter’s four ferrets. My greatest joy is spending time with my family, exploring, learning, and laughing together.

In addition to nature photography, I also love capturing beautiful floral still life images and I photograph people too. I am honored to be a Click Pro Elite and to have had several photographs published in an amazing book called Magic in the Wilderness by the group Women Capture Magic. I follow the principles of Nature First, which promote ethical photography practices, minimal disruption, and the well-being of our natural places and wildlife over our photographic goals and activities.

About this Blog

This blog is a place to share my experiences in nature, to ask questions and learn more about our natural world, and to connect with others over the wonder of nature. It is a reflection of my commitment to conservation and environmental stewardship, though I admit I am stumbling toward doing more and doing better in these areas. I believe in the importance of raising awareness about the beauty and fragility of our planet, as well as advocating for sustainable practices to preserve it for future generations. Through this blog, I hope to inspire curiosity and exploration, foster connection, share in the wonder of the natural world, and work together to transform our world for the better.
